Clinical & Diagnostic Biochemistry

This one-year, full-time MSc Programme equips graduates with Clinical biochemistry knowledge including technical and scientific skills aimed at developing clinical judgement. Providing them with a comprehensive overview of biochemical pathways and their relevance in health and disease states.



This programme will provide graduates with a comprehensive understanding of the pathophysiology and management of biochemical and endocrine disorders. Students will understand the methodological basis for their investigation and management with appreciation of the pre- to post- analytical steps and their significance. Students will understand the requirements of the quality management system as applicable to clinical diagnostic laboratories as we well as the regulatory, legal and ethical basis to practice. All such knowledge will be applied and demonstrated in practice during Spring and Summer module placements. Students will also apply their knowledge and skills through service review & audit, clinical translational research and development.

What Will I Learn?

This pre-entry career MSc is designed to take the student with excellent basic scientific skills and facilitate them to develop a broad knowledge of clinical biochemistry and how it is integral to the patient’s diagnosis, management and outcome.



This one-year, full-time MSc Programme equips graduates with

• Clinical biochemistry knowledge including technical and scientific skills aimed at developing clinical judgement. Providing them with a comprehensive overview of biochemical pathways and their relevance in health and disease states;

• Quality and accreditation of the clinical biochemistry diagnostic service; including experience of clinical translational research and development.

• Applied knowledge and understanding of diagnosis and management of patients from a clinical and scientific perspective;

• Techniques utilised in the practice of diagnostic clinical biochemistry, endocrinology and toxicology;

• Understanding of clinical areas and interpretation of results profiles in common and complex disease categories;

• Critical results reporting.

Entry requirements

Candidates must hold a minimum 2:1 in an honours undergraduate degree (NFQ Level 8) or international equivalence in a Biochemistry related discipline.

Or

a Postgraduate Degree in a relevant discipline (Minimum 30% Biochemistry content).



You may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), as UCD recognises formal, informal, and/or experiential learning. RPL may be awarded to gain Admission and/or credit exemptions on a programme.
