Internationalisation - Waterford

Overview

What is the Master of Business in Internationalisation?

The MBS Internationalisation programme is a one year taught postgraduate business programme that is aimed at students who are interested in developing the skills and knowledge to work in international business environments. Ireland’s export economy has created a set of world class companies and a supporting eco-system of SMEs that in particular has created demand for internationally-orientated business graduates. This course brings graduates to the cutting edge of the discipline by offering an international programme of study incorporating modules in international business negotiations, international strategy and international entrepreneurship. The programme aspires to produce graduates who make a critical contribution to the performance and success of international-oriented businesses.

Unique Features of the Programme

- Graduates will be uniquely equipped with a comprehensive range of skills in all major management and marketing processes (in international strategy, innovation and creativity, international marketing and digital marketing). A rigorously applied approach is taken on the programme, with mandatory engagement with live companies, in order to develop core specialist skills in international business and marketing practice and management.

- In light of the importance of developing good exposure for our students to international business environments, the MBSI programme is now offered as a Double Degree Masters programme which is part of a Joint Awarding Authority Agreement between SETU Waterford and QQI in Ireland and Brest Business School, France. In launching the programme at SETU Waterford (formerly WIT), Minister Brendan Howlin stated: “This double degree programme represents exactly the type of collaborative, innovative and focused approach that we hope to see more from our higher education sector. I see the double degree venture being undertaken by SETU Waterford and Brest Business School as a valuable contribution to enhancing Ireland’s capacity, and that of the South East region, to prosper”.

- With this innovation to the programme, students registered on the MBSI at SETU Waterford have the opportunity to study on a number of common modules with students on the Master of International Business (MIB) programme at Brest Business School in France. This comprises joint study on shared modules and other research activity. Two of the shared modules are delivered directly to the combined student cohort with one module delivered in Brest and another in Waterford

Further Study

A key part of the programme is the collaboration that we maintain with a number of export companies, which act as ‘live’ cases for student engagement with the international business and strategy process. Students also work on integrated projects with commercial companies and start-up entrepreneurs in our business incubation centre (ArcLABS). ArcLABS is a unique state-of- the-art Innovation Centre in SETU Waterford where there is a growing community of early stage companies and a base of over 200 highly skilled business and technology professionals. For example, a number of modules from the programme have practical in-company projects, where a commercial company is a client for consulting work.

Our extensive engagement with industry in Ireland and France ensures graduates have the required knowledge and practical skill-set for rapid employment in internationally-oriented companies. The majority of graduates choose to work in international companies with roles in banking, advertising and international marketing. However, many of our students have also gone on to excel in a range of careers such as human resource management and public relations.

As well as the academic content, our graduate students can avail of a number of career and other support services during their studies. These include a tailored induction programme with a day-long team development event and dedicated workshops on the following topics: groupwork, intercultural communication, academic writing, presentations from past students and panel discussions with lecturers on the programme providing advice and guidance on professional development and career opportunities.

The programme uses a range of highly-experiential learning and assessment methods such as live consultancy projects, group work, case presentations, problem-based learning and integrated work projects. The programme director in association with the SETU Waterford Careers Office provides students with significant preparation and mentoring for future careers including ongoing updates and advice regarding applying for positions in companies; interview skills and preparation advice and ongoing e-notifications of vacancies/openings for graduate positions/jobs in Irish and international companies.
