Languages Cultures & Linguistics - Localisation

This full-time programme develops your skill set for employment in the fast developing localisation sector in Ireland and globally. It fosters an understanding of how intercultural, linguistic, sociocultural and technical knowledge and linguistic investigation methods can be successfully engaged to design culturally and socially sensitive and appropriate products for different global markets. Students learn about localisation processes and profiles through engagement with academics, practitioners, learning resources and hands-on exercises and learning (internship).

The course is suitable for people who have an interest in communication processes in the globalised world, a high linguistics and cultural proficiency in two or more languages and good technical skills (or an interest in acquiring them) for employment in the modern language industry. The programme fosters an understanding of how language, culture and technical skills interact to design high specification products. The programme is designed as a hands-on learning experience that promotes employability.

This 60 ECTS programme runs over 3 Trimesters and consists of eight modules. In each module, you will explore specific themes through a variety of learning approaches including virtual and face-to-face classes, self-directed learning, reflective learning, group and individual student effort. You will also complete a compulsory 8 to 12-week internship. The UCD Careers office will support your career planning and the sourcing of internship placement based on established networks within the industry. However, finding a suitable internship is ultimately your own responsibility.

The aim of the course is to prepare you for a career in the growing and multifaceted localisation industry in Ireland and abroad. You will go on to work for smaller or larger companies in the field both as self-employed and/or employees in various roles ranging from project management to junior/senior localisors.
