How did the Rotational Development Program (RDP) prepare you for the world of work?

The nature of the RDP is to provide a well-rounded foundation and knowledge of the particular track you are selected for. As an RDP based in Ireland, I’m on the Global Fund Services (GFS) asset servicing track. The way the program is designed is there are a number of core departments in which you must do a rotation, each of which lasts 4 months.

These 3 departments for asset servicing are generally Custody, Transfer Agency and Fund Accounting. I’m currently midway through my third rotation, before moving onto my final rotation, which will last 6 months, in client services. I would argue that this program has prepared me for the world of work better than anything else could.

Not only does it allow me to build a solid understanding of the importance of company culture/value and develop a strong business acumen, but it has also allowed me to make significant strides in developing my personal brand and growing my network.

What was the best part of the RDP?

For me, it was the duties you’re expected to carry out outside of BAU such as coordinating events and the opportunity to meet and present to senior execs.

How did Northern Trust keep you engaged during the RDP?

The nature of the program means that you have to constantly adapt to new environments and you’re constantly learning so it was rather easy to stay engaged. However, outside of that there are always opportunities to get involved in plenty of other opportunities like the BRCs or the APRC case challenge which I took part in this year (as did some co-ops).

What do you feel differentiates Northern Trust’s grad program from other grad programs?

Certainly the exposure to senior execs. Myself and the other RDP associate met Mike O’Grady (Global Chairman and CEO) and Carl Tannenbaum (Northern Trust Chief Economist) on their visits to the Limerick offices. We’re also given a mentor with whom I have regular meeting with who helps guide me and advises me on how to succeed and achieve my ambitions.

Describe your RDP in 10 words or less

Demanding, fulfilling and a platform for success.

Why did you choose Northern Trust for grad experience?

For me, it was all about being in a company whose values aligned with mine but also a company that promoted career progression and could demonstrate a plan to progress and develop as a person and as a professional. A company that supported your career ambitions and had the resources in place to encourage it.
